Answer
THE MINISTER OF YOUTH AFFAIRS & SPORTS
(SHRI ANURAG SINGH THAKUR)
(a) to (d) ‘Sports’ being a State subject the responsibility of development of sports, including training
of sportspersons and development of infrastructure to ensure that Indian players do not have to go
out of India for training due to lack of infrastructure in the field of sports, rests primarily with State /
Union Territory Governments. Central Government only supplements their efforts by bridging
critical gaps. Elite athletes preparing for international competitions are provided with international
standard State-of-the-art sports equipment and infrastructure besides services of Indian and foreign
coaches and support staff as per specific requirement of the individual/team. The sports infrastructure
facilities available with Sports Authority of India (SAI) has sufficient capacity to cater to the training
needs of a large number of athletes including high performance training to elite athletes. Year-wise
details of athletes trained in India and abroad during the last five years under the schemes of this
Ministry are at Annexure.
