Increasing number of fake Universities
Question:
Will the Minister of Education be pleased to state:
(a) the number of fake Universities that have come up in the last three years, State-wise
and year-wise details thereof;
(b) whether there is any compensation program provided by Government for the losses
incurred by students who were registered there;
(c) if so, details thereof; and
(d) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a): The list of fake universities are available in the website of the University Grants
Commission (UGC) at https://www.ugc.gov.in/page/Fake-Universities.aspx. Currently 20
institutions figure in this list. The UGC has informed that in the last three years, the
following fake Institutions have been included in the UGC list of fake Universities:
i. Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad, Bharat Bhawan, Matiyari Chinhat, Faizabad Road, Lucknow,
Uttar Pradesh–227 105. (Year: 2021)
ii. All India Institute of Public & Physical Health Sciences (AIIPPHS), State Government
University, Office Kh. No. 608-609, 1st Floor, SantKripal Singh Public Trust Building
Near BDO Office, Alipur, Delhi-36. (Year: 2022)
iii. Bible Open University of India, H.No.49-35-26, N.G.O’s Colony, Visakhapatnam, Andhra
Pradesh-530016. (Year: 2023)
(b) to (d): The Central Government as well as the UGC are taking various steps to protect
the innocent students from the trap of such Universities/Institutions, which inter-alia
include:
i. Public Notices about this are uploaded in UGC website to caution students,
guardians and the public at large about such institutions.
ii. From time to time, the UGC writes letters to Chief Secretaries and Education
Secretaries of respective State/UT Governments to take action against fake
universities/institutes located in their jurisdiction.
iii. UGC has filed FIRs against some of these fake universities.
iv. UGC has issued show-cause/ warning notices against such self-styled institutions.
v. In addition, the Ministry has also requested the Chief Secretaries of all State/UT
Governments to take appropriate action against those involved in defrauding and
cheating students by misrepresenting themselves as “Universities”, awarding
degrees and using the “University” with their name.
