PROMOTION OF SPORTS IN RURAL AREAS

Question:

Will the Minister of YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS be pleased to state:

(a) whether Government has made any special scheme to encourage and promote sports among the
youth of rural areas;

(b) if so, the details of the schemes thereof;

(c) the total number of youths including from the State of Haryana who have been selected so far
under the Khelo India Scheme, State-wise and gender-wise details thereof; and
(d) the facilities being provided by Government to make the selected youth trained and skilled in the
above scheme, the details thereof?

Answer

(a) and (b) The Ministry implements the following schemes for the promotion of sports activities in
the country, including among youth of rural areas. These schemes include: – (i) Khelo India Scheme
(ii) Assistance to National Sports Federations (NSFs); (iii) Special Awards to Winners in
International sports events and their Coaches; (iv) National Sports Awards, Pension to Meritorious
Sports Persons; (v) National Sports Development Fund; and (vi) Sports Training Centres run through
Sports Authority of India. Details of these schemes are available in the public domain on the
dashboard the Ministry.

(c) A total of 2510 Khelo India Athletes are presently getting support under the Khelo India Scheme,
out of which 406 athletes belong to State of Haryana. State-wise and gender-wise details of the same
are at Annexure – I.

(d) Identified athletes under the Khelo India Scheme have option to enrol for residential/ nonresidential training and are provided Out of Pocket allowances of ₹ 10,000/- per month from the
month of his/her joining the training. under Khelo India accredited academies where a Khelo India
Athlete joins for residential training are also supported by additional ₹ 5.08 lakh per athlete per
annum for facilities like coaching, sports science support, diet, equipment, consumables, insurance
charges, etc.
